Driving to Villino Rubini

Villino Rubini is in Brunate, in the hills above Lake Como, about 15 minutes by road above the city of Como. The estate has private parking on site, so a car can stay parked for the whole stay. Drivers from the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Denmark cross the Alps through Switzerland and enter Italy at Chiasso, on the road down to Como.

Arriving With a Full Car

The estate has private parking on site, so a car can stay parked for the whole stay. Como is about 15 minutes away by road, and the funicular from the Como lakeside reaches Brunate in 7 minutes, so the town and the boats can be reached without moving the car.

Tolls and Vignettes on the Way

Cars need no motorway vignette in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg or Germany.

Switzerland requires one. It is sold as a windscreen sticker or as an e-vignette linked to the number plate, and there is no daily, weekly or monthly option, so a single crossing takes the same vignette as a year of them. Buy it before you reach the border, online or at a Swiss service station, and fit the sticker to the windscreen before you join the motorway. Driving without one is fined at the roadside.

The Gotthard and San Bernardino road tunnels are covered by the vignette. Nothing further is paid at the portal.

Italian motorways are tolled. Take the ticket at the barrier as you enter and keep it for the exit.

The Gotthard Tunnel, and When to Avoid It

The Gotthard road tunnel is the bottleneck on the drive south. Queues at the north portal are normal on summer Saturdays, at Easter and around Ferragosto, and they build from mid morning, so crossing early in the day or in the evening usually avoids the worst of them. The A13 over the San Bernardino is the standard alternative, by Chur, Bellinzona and Lugano. Touring Club Schweiz publishes live queue information for both crossings; it is worth a look on the morning you travel.

From Hamburg and Copenhagen a route planner may offer a line by Lindau, Bregenz and the San Bernardino instead. That line uses Austrian motorway, so it needs an Austrian vignette as well as the Swiss one. Both are sold online and at service stations before the border.

Winter Tyres and Chains

The Province of Como requires winter tyres, or snow chains carried in the car, on its provincial roads through the winter months. The dates are set by a provincial ordinance published each autumn, so check the notice from the Provincia di Como for the winter you are travelling in. The road up from Como climbs the whole way, and that is the stretch where chains matter, so carry them if you are driving here in winter.

Arriving by Train

Trains from Milano Centrale reach Como San Giovanni in under 40 minutes. A second line runs from Milano Cadorna to Como Lago, the station on the Como lakefront. Trenord publishes the timetable for both; check it for departures on the day you travel.

Both stations are in central Como. With luggage, a taxi from either one is the simpler last stage.

The Funicular from the Como Lakeside

The funicular climbs from the Como lakeside to the village of Brunate in 7 minutes. The lower station is at Piazza Alcide De Gasperi 4, on the Como lakefront. ATM publishes the timetable and sells the tickets, so check the first and last departures for the day you travel.

Bicycles, pets, pushchairs and other bulky items travel on a ticket of their own, so allow for that if you are carrying a large case.

The estate is above the village. If you are arriving by funicular, tell us your arrival time when you book and we will advise on the last part of the journey.

The Brunate Tourist Tax

Brunate charges a tourist tax per person per night, set by the Comune di Brunate. The Comune publishes the current rate and the number of nights it applies to.

Como's Limited Traffic Zone

Central Como has a limited traffic zone. It covers the walled city and the squares around it, and it is monitored by camera. The Comune di Como publishes the list of streets inside the zone.

Set your navigation to Via Giacomo Scalini 62, Brunate, rather than to Como city centre, so that the route is planned to the estate. If you intend to drive into central Como during your stay, read the Comune list first.

Taxis from Como

Taxis in Como run on a meter, on the tariff set by the Comune di Como. The ride up to Brunate leaves the city, so agree the fare with the driver before you set off.
